CALL FOR PAPERS

Indigenous Peoples and Governance International Conference Montréal, April 17, 18, 19 and 20, 2012

To conclude its research activities, the multidisciplinary Indigenous Peoples and Governance team is holding an international conference on “How to Break out of Colonialism” on April 17, 18, 19 and 20, 2012. This is a call for papers for the conference.
The twofold goal of the conference is:

  1. To take a critical look at the knowledge produced in the field of indigenous governance, as well as in the field of indigenous studies. We propose to review epistemological and methodological practices related to the way research and reflection are carried out in this area, in particular with respect to incorporating perspectives anchored in indigenous tradition.
  2. To provide a renewed corpus of knowledge and approaches able to contribute to conceptualizing the stakes involved in indigenous governance and how to get along together, and to envision an alternative corpus of knowledge that takes into account current issues and the situation of indigenous peoples in Québec, Canada, and around the world.

However, the new epistemological perspectives have to be based on a central issue: How do they make it possible to deal with indigenous governance outside of the colonial frame of reference?

This critical examination and renewal will be structured in accordance with four fundamental issues crucial to the future of indigenous peoples and the forms of governance that are or will be put in place:

  1. The long-term evolution of relationships between indigenous and non-indigenous people;
  2. Implicit and explicit postulates in law applying to indigenous people;
  3. Identification of transition processes with a view to self-government and self-determination of indigenous peoples;
  4. Redefinition of the relationships between the state and indigenous leaders: international comparison.
