Invitation: Convention on First Nations Governance

Invitation: Convention on First Nations Governance

12 and 13 of October 2011

Presented by Centre des Premières Nations Nikanite de l’UQAC

This October 12th and 13th, aboriginal representatives, guest speakers, and researchers will meet at Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQAC) to discuss on the great issues and future perspectives surrounding governance of First Nations.

Last May 25th, as she was officially announcing her retirement from her post as auditor general of Canada, Sheila Fraser sounded several warnings. Among the most important, she admitted being particularly preoccupied about the deterioration of the Aboriginal situation of the country. After a number of verifications, she exhorted governments and First Nations to question themselves on the programs and services offered to the Aboriginals.

The Convention Governance of First Nations: Future Perspectives offers a platform for reflection on many issues surrounding a better future for First Nations. Subjects such as: the needs pertaining to management and territorial politics, the management of resources, the economical development, the legal issues, and urban governance will be addressed during these two days. A plenary meeting is also planned at the end of the two days so as to provide the opportunity to identify potential solutions and concrete actions stemming from the participants discussions. Therefore, the population interested on the stakes and issues surrounding governance of First Nations is invited to attend.

The Convention on Governance of First Nations: Future Perspectives will welcome many guest speakers, including Mrs. Carole Lévesque, Professor at INRS and director of DIALOG Network, M. Martin Papillon, Professor of political sciences at University of Ottawa, as well as Mrs.Minnie Grey, Chief Negotiator for the Nunavik Regional Government, M. Michel Belley, Rector of UQAC, and the Regional Chief of the First Nations Assembly of Quebec and Labrador, M. Ghislain Picard, will be present for the opening of the convention.

On the evening of October 12th, a banquet will be offered to the participants at Hotel Chicoutimi where Florent Vollant will give a private concert. The cocktail reception prior to the dinner-show will be an occasion to present the report done by the Groupe de recherche et d’interventions régionales de l’UQAC (GRIR) on the place of aboriginal women pertaining the governance issue.
